On Thursday afternoons, the entire first grade gets together. This may be to introduce a new comprehension strategy, writing trait, or just another fun learning opportunity. On this particular Thursday, students worked collaboratively to solve the task cards posted around the commons area. They had to use their schema, along with the clues, to make an inference as to what it might be. We wanted to create an area where you can easily access information regarding your child's first grade year at Prairieland! You can click on the links above to gain information regarding our lunch and IMC times, curriculum, resources for helping your child at home, important dates and fun things to look forward to in first grade, a place to access apps and websites your child may use, codes for ordering from Scholastic, as well as access to word lists. We also hope to use this area as a place to share pictures from the STEM activities and other fun things first grade does together! This website is a work in progress, and we will continue to add things throughout the year! STEM Activities in September and October!Name Tag Challenge First grade got together for our first whole group S.T.E.M. challenge. Students were given the task to make a name tag with materials given. The challenge was that it must also hold a pencil, show their name, and stand up on it's own. Enjoy getting a peek at our engineers! Wing-It For our October first grade S.T.E.M. challenge, the kids were challenged to create wings to put on their bat in an attempt to make it fly the farthest. The kids had to think about what qualities the wings should have to make them fly far. They had time to discuss a plan with one another and then execute their plan. We had so much fun seeing whose bat would fly the farthest! Congratulations to Miss Addie Pope, who made wings that flew the farthest in first grade! After picking out the bats that flew the furthest, we had a conversation about what each of their wings had in common! |
